Discomfort:

When God Calls Us Beyond Ourselves

January 6, 2026

Scripture Reference:
“I will be with you.” — Exodus 3:12

When God called Moses from the burning bush, He wasn’t calling a confident leader. He wasn’t calling a polished speaker. He wasn’t calling a man who felt ready. He was calling a man who pushed back. And when we read his story in Exodus, it’s easy to shake our heads at how often Moses tried to deflect the Almighty God.

Moses questioned, resisted, doubted, and listed every insecurity he had. And yet—God never changed His assignment. Why?

Because the call was never about Moses’ ability. It was always about God’s might.

God Is Mighty — So Why Do We Doubt?

When God asks us to do something, our first instinct is often to look at ourselves—our weaknesses, our limitations, our lack. But God never asked Moses to rely on Moses. He asked Moses to rely on Him.

We can feel bold and capable in areas where we’re comfortable, where we’ve succeeded before, or where we feel naturally gifted. But the moment God calls us into something that requires dependence—something that stretches us, humbles us, or exposes our need—we suddenly shrink back.

Not because God is small. But because we forget He is mighty.

Inadequacy Isn’t a Disqualification — It’s an Invitation

Maybe God allows us to feel inadequate so we won’t steal the glory. Maybe He calls us into places where our confidence runs out so His strength can begin. Maybe the very thing we fear is the place where His power will shine the brightest.

Moses didn’t step into leadership because he felt ready. He stepped because God said, “I will be with you.”

And that promise is still enough.

A Question for Your Heart Today

What is God calling you to do that feels bigger than you? I know I sure have mine looking me square between the eyes!!! What assignment, conversation, ministry, or step of obedience makes you feel unqualified? What basket is He asking you to weave—trusting that He will carry it where you cannot?

My friend, you don’t have to feel strong. You just have to move forward in faith. Because the God who calls you is the God who goes with you.

I invite you to join hands with me today. Imagine us sitting together having coffee and gripping each other’s hands tightly in encouragement… “You can do it!” Why? Because He has called you and He will get the glory.

 Be Brave in your Discomfort,

Gena
